LIFE IN PRINT: WILLIAM KENTRIDGE
AND PABLO PICASSO EXHIBITION

WHERE: Art Gallery of Alberta(AGA), Edmonton, Alberta

WHEN: May 3rd - October 5th 2025

This past month I had the wonderful opportunity in visiting the Alberta Art Gallery in Edmonton. Designed by Randall Stout, the Gallery is located on Sir Winston Churchill Square in the heart of downtown. When I first entered, I immediately noticed the stunning windows against the wrap around "steel ribbon" that emitted so much daylight on a dark, rainy day. The bulding is inspired by the Saskatchewan River and the Aurora Borealis.

Here are my favourite pieces from three exhibitions: Life In Print: William Kentridge and Pablo Picasso, Seeing and Being Seen and What We Leave and What we Take.

MY FAVOURITE PIECE
Mark Rothko. No.1 White and Red. 1962. Oil on canvas

"I am interested only in expressing basic human emotions - tragedy, ecstasy, doom and so on. If you...are moved only by their colour relationships, then you miss the point."

WOVEN HISTORIES: TEXTILES AND MODERN ABSTRACTION

WHERE: National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario
Special Exhibitions Galleries LEVEL #1

WHEN: November 8th, 2024 - March 2nd, 2025
(I know this exhibition has passed but the pieces are so wonderful to share)

Unfortunately I could not attend this exhibition but my daughter attended and shared these inspiring photos with me. I will definitely enjoy each and every piece in the Exhibition Catalogue - "Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction" by Lynne Cooke.

Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington in collaboration with The National Gallery of Canada, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, this exhibition showcases 130 works by more then 45 artists. Some of the textile techniques that are shown include: weaving, knitting, felting, knotting and netting. This exhibition blurs the lines that separate fine art, textiles, applied arts and handicrafts.

"Woven histories offers a fresh and authoritative look at textiles - particularly weaving - as a major force in the evolution of modern abstraction."

KINTSUGI: HISTORY AND TECHNIQUES OF THE JAPANESE ART OF
CERAMIC REPAIR
I am fascinated by this process - the traditional Japanese craft of repairing ceramics using precious metals to symbolize the beauty of human fragility.

Visit The Nikkei Centre website for more information on the many Arts and Cultural Programs they provide and Dojin Arts and Three Little Spruce for more information on upcoming Kintsugi workshops.
