How Do You Live?
By: Genzaburo Yoshino with a foreword by Neil Gaiman
Neil Gaiman begins his foreward wishing he read this book when he was a young boy...I felt the same way. I found this book after I watched Hayao Miyasaki's "The Boy and The Heron". I discovered this was Miyasaki's favourite childhood book.
Written in 1937, "How Do You Live" chronicles a young boys life - Koperu as he searches for his place in the world after his father's passing. Written through philosophical letters from his Uncle and Koperu's school experiences, we quickly explore loyalty, grief, friendship and finding one's place in a complicated world. The book definitely forces us to ponder, "What are my most important values?", "What kind of person would I like to be?" and most importantly, "How do YOU live?"
